Harris & North Uist, Outer Hebrides
Machair is one of the rarest habitats in Europe. Made from shells it is the area of cultivated dune pasture between the land and the sea.
I am interested in the sensitive small scale method of farming called crofting and how it sustains the machair and it's rich diversity of wildlife.
I travel to the Hebrides in summer and sleep out in the dunes , the machair is flowering then and it is like being in heaven.
